WHAT IS BMI?
Importance of Body Mass Index

BMI stands for Body Mass IndexBMI is an indicator for the amount of body fat for most people. It is used as a screening too by doctors and healthcare providers to identify whether an adult is at a healthy weight. There are other BMI calculators made for children.

It is an easy way to assess your current weight and determine if you are at a healthy weight or are over weight.

There are consequences to carrying extra weight, namely increased blood pressure, increased triglycerides, increase risk of Type II diabetes and increase of Cardiovascular disease.

BMI values less than 18.5 kg/m² are considered underweight. BMI values from 18.5 kg/m² to 24.9 kg/m² are healthy (non-Asian).

Overweight is defined as a body mass index of 25.0 to less than 30.0 kg/m² (non-Asian). People with BMIs in this range and above have an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease.

Obesity is defined as a BMI of 30.0 kg/m² or greater (non-Asian).

Asian Americans  have a greater prevalence of type 2 diabetes and heart disease compared to caucasian Americans despite having lower rates of obesity under current federal BMI standards (1).  For these reasons there are different guidlines for the Asian population.

There are many benefits to maintaining a healthy: fewer joint and muscle pains (especialy in the knee), increased energy and ability to perform tasks easie, improved blood pressure, reduced triglycerides and blood glucose, redused risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.
