WHAT IS WAIST TO HIP RATIO?
Dangers of Visceral Fat Waist to Hip Ratio

It is well documented that carrying extra weight around the middle is danergous to your health.  The fat in your abdominal cavity, where many organs are located, is called viseral fat.  The fat that you pinch on the surfase is subcutaneous fat.

Viseral fat is known as "active fat" because it can dangerously  affect your hormone function by pumping out cytokines.

Visceral fat makes the body more vulnerable to type 2 diabetes, heart disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, high blood pressure, Alzheimer's disease, and even certain types of cancer (1).

In this case pear shape is more desirable.  A person who is apple shape will carry more visceral fat leading to an increase risk of disease.

The good news is that visceral fat responds well to exercise and diet (2).

Waist to Hip Ratio Norms

To measure waist to hip ratio-  the waist is measured at the narrowest part of the waist, between the lowest rib and iliac crest, and the hip circumference is taken at the widest area of the hips at the greatest protuberance of the buttocks.

Before reading the tape measure, ensure that the tape is snug, but does not compress the skin, and is parallel to the floor. The measurement is made at the end of a normal expiration Then simply divide the waist measurement by the hip measurement.

Waist circumference is another measurement used to estimate weight status in relation to potential disease risk.  Similar to the waist to hip ration, it looks at visceral fat or abdominal fat.

It is not a diagnostic tool.  Your healthcare provided would have to run other assessments and tests to evaluate disease risk and diagnose disease status

Men are at increased relative risk for disease if they have a waistcircumference greater than 40 inches (102 cm).

Women are at anincreased relative risk if they have a waist circumference greater than 35 inches (88 cm) (3).

To measure waist circumferene - place a measuring tape horizontally around the abdomen at the level of the iliac crest (hip bone).

Before reading the tape measure, ensure that the tape is snug, but does not compress the skin, and is parallel to the floor.

The measurement is made at the end of a normal expiration (4).
